My new beauty 'hack'

February 18, 2017

I like to find little secrets no-one else knows around Wellington, especially when it comes to beauty treatments.

It can be a challenge to find a service you like at an affordable price. And when you need to be on a budget it is even harder. I have bounced around many salons for things like waxing and the occasional manicure. However, I've recently discovered a new treatment and technician who I couldn't help but want to share with you - it is honestly THAT amazing.

Ever since noticing Resident Jaime Hayden's thick and long lashes when I met her last year, I've been curious - especially when she told me they were fake! She explained she had them done at WhipLash Lashes and since then I've been meaning to try it. Last weekend, I finally did. I found WhipLash on Instagram and DM'ed them for an appointment.

What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions are really simple. They glue a very very small lash to your own eyelashes. The false lash is very very little and applied by hand. You need to be a specialist technician to apply them but the prices can vary up to $120 per set! Jaime told me that she saw WhipLash Lash extensions, run out of the owners own home in Brooklyn. This keeps the prices down to between $60 for a new set and $50 for a touch-up - waaay more in my price range. I decided to book myself in for a wee treat (keep reading for YOUR little treat below.

Thank you!

What was the treatment like?

The process of getting there was a little tricky (pro tip: don't try and use google maps while driving the narrow back streets of Brooklyn) but once I finally made it (I also left a candle burning at home and had to turn around because I was half an hour late!!) I was able to relax in the side room of WhipLashes #girlbosses Sera's house.

"Use this promo code [LASH ME] to get $10 off your first or next time at WhipLash"

Now don't go expecting a full day spa - this is a functional beauty session, not whale music time. While the room may be simple, Sera applies every eyelash with precision. Unfortunately, I had a wee bit of tearing up at the collagen pad under my eye, but apart from that everything went as smooth as silk. We chatted away and Sera is very friendly. If you just want a wee kip while she works her magic, Sera is happy with that too.

What was my first impression?

I immediately loved the end result when I saw my lashes. It looked exactly like me but with a bit of help. I want to look like the best version of me and a bit of extra oomph in my lashes is perfect.

One week on...

This may be my new addiction, kids. A week later, I love the way they look and am so relieved I don't have to bother applying mascara every single day. It just makes getting ready in the morning faster. I love that these lashes are so subtle and natural looking but everyone who knows me does a little double-take, telling me I look more awake! The only nuisance is that I am a bit of an eye-rubber so I need to catch myself before I start touching my eyes or the lashes won't last. I just gently pat them instead.

Eyelash extensions are SOO fun and I've had soo many compliments about them. They'll last around 3-4 weeks I'm told so I am already booked in for round two. I recommend these little babies hard - and WhipLash is a great place to go get flossed up with minimum fuss or damage to your wallet! Sera is really lovely and I think you should try her too so we are doing a little promo code.

💕🌎 {Long-Caption} 💕🌎Love isn’t just romantic, a nuclear kind of love. Love is your relationship to your Mum. To your friends. To colleagues. To your Dad. To your aunties. To your hairdresser (here’s a photo with mine - and friend - David). Love is close by, smiling at your neighbours. Love is something you share sisters and brothers. With your local barista...

Went for a delicious swim in Oriental Bay on Valentines Day eve today. (I’ve written a blog post on my blog by the way about what to get someone else or yourself for Valentines Day if you feel like reading - the link is in my bio). It’s SO nice when you’re feeling slightly sluggy from a day inside the office to be able to pop on your bathers (mine are from @lonelylingerie of course) and take a dip. SPLISH SPLASH SPLOSH 💧
Like so many things in life, it’s freezing when you dip your toe in, but if you take the plunge you’ll find it’s actually quite refreshing! 💙 💦🏊🏻‍♂️

Brilliant minds, good friends and creative collaborators 👯‍♀️ Have you popped in and seen their @feverhotel exhibition at @huntersandcollectors1987 on #CubaStreet yet? 🔥👁❤️ Love the amazing photos they take, which deal with sex, colour, feminist themes and dominance - and love Xoe and Ash even more ❤️ 🙌🏻 (Ash takes my photos for #theresidentsofwelly whenever I am in them (she’s on the left). Wellington needs to support awesome artists like these incredible women. 🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥Hunters and Collectors Gallery is upstairs at their Cuba Street store. Why not check it out this week?! ❤️❤️💃🏼
🌿🇳🇿Happy Waitangi Day! 🇳🇿🌿I hope you’ve had a pleasant and relaxing day, and if you enjoyed some spiritual and historical rituals, that those were beautiful for you and your soul in connecting to our wonderful country, Aotearoa. Today, dear friend @____glwilliams of modern Waikato farm @__olmh, her family, Matt and I went to government house for the Bledisloe Garden Party with the Governor General Dame Patsy Ready. Before handy amazing ‘hair-artiste’ (my term, not his) David from @mattforsmanhair popped by on his day off to make our tresses stand out from the crowd! He is a really wonderful person and a skilled expert in hair! I also wore my @taylorboutique dress and did my own makeup 💙
Before going along to Government House I had so many questions before going along today that I thought other people might want to know the answers too as well that I put a blog post up in conversation with Government House Engagement and Communications Advisor Jo Blick - What to wear, how to eat, how to address people and whether you can take selfies was all covered. It was a lovely afternoon with great food and wonderful energetic people. Go to www.theresidents.co.nz to read the blog post and find out how to do Government House right!
🌱Can you really find what you need in your bathroom to scratch your beauty and bodycare itch without buying into single use plastic? 🌱 This year we’re all trying to reduce how much plastic we use, whether it is saying no to straws or bringing our own bags to go shopping for groceries, right? So I wondered whether I could improve my carbon footprint by just stepping into the shower 🚿🛁. I paid a visit to @lush_newzealand and asked what they could do for me, from serums to self tanner. Did it work? What did I pick? And isn’t it all just about the bath bombs? (Spoiler: no but they’re still so close to my heart!) 💣
You’ll be surprised about how much of your regime can go naked. Go to the blog to read more about it! 🧽🧴🛀🏼🧼
